Speedvark is Hemel Hempstead's second most important rock band. When they released their first album, 'Pigeon Pop', in the year 2000, Q Magazine described it as 'A knees up redefinition of the term eclectic'. Formed in 1986 the band has just two people in it: Ben (who plays guitar, keys, bass and lead vox) and Pedro (who plays drums and occasional bass, keys, vocals). Terrified of publicity, certain dogs and most people, the band took 14 years to write, record and release their self-titled follow up.
Speedvark love artists such as Here We Go Magic, Parquet Courts, Night Works, The Juan MacLean, White Denim, Disclosure, JJ Cale, David Sylvian, Motorpsycho, Field Music, Scuba, Tame Impala, Everything Everything, Orbital, Mulate Astatke and Paco De Lucia. They’ve been inspired by all of them but – it would be fair to say - sound like none of them.
